  Handling reputation genuinely lives up to the hype

  Bought the Altroz mainly for its handling reputation and it's lived up to that around Kochi's twisty backroads. The MacPherson strut front suspension genuinely holds its own through corners, more planted than I expected for a hatchback in this price bracket. Build quality feels properly premium for the segment, the cabin materials and switchgear don't feel like a budget car. 6 airbags and the 5-star NCAP rating add real confidence when pushing it a bit. The 87bhp NA engine isn't quick, but the chassis underneath is genuinely engaging. For a driver's hatchback on a budget, this has been a pleasant surprise.

  Not really built for sustained highway duty on CNG

  Did a Delhi-Jaipur run in the Altroz CNG and the trip highlighted some real shortcomings for highway use. The naturally-aspirated engine feels noticeably strained pushing highway speeds on CNG, with noticeable noise and vibration creeping into the cabin under load. Ride quality on Delhi-Jaipur's rougher patches was below what I expected, low-speed comfort in particular felt worse than the sedan I traded in. CNG mileage was decent at around 20km/kg, which is the one genuine positive. No cruise control made the long stretch more tiring. Safety features are solid at least. Not really built for sustained highway duty on CNG.

  Sensible hatchback, just not much spark to drive

  The Altroz petrol manual is a pleasant enough hatchback but doesn't have much spark for someone who actually enjoys driving. The naturally-aspirated 87bhp engine feels genuinely flat past city speeds around Ahmedabad, with noticeable vibration under hard acceleration. The 5-speed manual is precise at least, and MacPherson strut suspension gives decent handling feel through corners. 6 airbags standard even at this trim is a genuine positive for the segment. Build quality feels solid, nothing loose or rattly. It's a safe, sensible hatchback, just not one that gets the pulse racing in any way.

  Good economy, comfort on long drives could be better

  The Altroz CNG has worked out well for running costs around Pune, but comfort on longer family drives has been a mixed bag. Seat cushioning feels a bit firmer than I'd like for hour-long trips, and under-thigh support isn't quite up to some rivals we test drove. Safety is genuinely strong though, 6 airbags and the 5-star NCAP rating give real confidence carrying the kids. CNG mileage settles around 21km/kg in mixed use, which has kept our fuel costs low. Boot space shrinks noticeably with the CNG tank fitted, a real consideration for family luggage. Good economy car, comfort could be better.
