The Safari petrol offers strong power, good safety and a 50L tank for highway hauls, but lacks any infotainment, cruise control, and rear ventilation refinements that long-distance drivers value.
Took the Safari diesel manual on a Jaipur-Udaipur trip and while the highway comfort was genuinely good, the lack of cruise control on my variant made the long stretches more tiring than they needed to be. The 168bhp diesel has enough punch for confident overtaking, and the tall driving position gives good visibility on unfamiliar roads. No infotainment or navigation meant relying entirely on my phone mounted on the dash. Seats stayed comfortable over the 6-hour drive at least. Mileage came in around 14kmpl, reasonable for the segment. A capable long-distance SUV, just budget for a higher trim if you want cruise control.
The Safari diesel manual has become our go-to for family trips out of Hyderabad, and the comfort on long drives is the standout. My kids have done 6-7 hour stretches without any complaints, the seats and suspension soak up rough patches well. 6 airbags and the safety rating gave us real confidence carrying the whole family. Diesel mileage settles around 14-15kmpl on the highway, reasonable for a vehicle this size. Cabin does pick up some engine noise under hard acceleration. No touchscreen or Bluetooth on our variant is a genuine miss for keeping kids entertained on long trips, but otherwise this has been a solid family SUV.
Do frequent Ahmedabad-Udaipur runs in the Safari diesel automatic and highway stability is genuinely its strongest trait. The 168bhp turbo-diesel with 350Nm makes overtaking on two-lane highways stress-free, and the cabin stays composed at 100-110kmph. Tilt and telescopic steering helps dial in a comfortable driving position for long stretches. 50-litre tank means fewer fuel stops on longer routes. Mileage settles around 14.5-15kmpl on the highway, matching what other owners report. Build quality feels solid overall, though I've read about turbo issues on some cars past the two-year mark which makes me a little cautious long-term. For road trips though, it's been excellent.
Went for the petrol manual specifically for the engagement, and the 168bhp turbo with the 6-speed gearbox delivers exactly that around Chennai's outer roads. 280Nm of torque makes overtaking effortless, and the manual shift adds a connection you don't get with the automatic. 235-section tyres on 17-inch alloys give it genuine grip through corners for a car this size. My base trim skips the touchscreen and Bluetooth entirely though, which feels like a big miss for 2026. Still, as a driver's SUV in this segment, it's been a genuinely fun ownership experience so far.
